What exactly is massage therapy?
Massage is the manipulation of both superficial and deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue using various hands-on techniques, in order to enhance their function, aid in the healing process, reduce stress and tension, decrease muscle reflex activity, inhibit motor-neuron excitability, and promote relaxation and well-being.
What kind of training do massage therapists get?
In New York State, you must be state-licensed to practice Massage. Omni therapists have all gone through 1200+ hours of training and are all state-licensed. In addition, Omni requires a therapist to have at least 3 years experience before we consider hiring them. A Licensed Massage Therapist is referred to as an LMT.
Why in general do people go to a massage therapist?
Other than in cases where it is a prescribed therapy, people come because they are experiencing an uncomfortable sensation or pain in their body, feeling stiff, tight, or achy, or because they are feeling stressed and run down. Some come as part of a preventive wellness program designed to help keep their body relaxed and their mind at ease. A massage therapy session should be looked forward to as a time in your week when you are able to relax, unwind, take care of yourself, relieve stress and tension, and recharge and rejuvenate yourself.
What types of conditions do massage therapists treat?
Massage therapists deal with muscular and joint issues. Most conditions involving muscles and joints will benefit from the decrease in tension and reduction in inflammation achieved by a massage session, which also tends to reduce the associated pain. Conditions frequently helped by massage therapy include: back pain, neck pain, hip and leg pain, and post surgical recovery from hip replacements and spinal surgeries. We also treat TMJ disorders (problems with the jaw joint), carpal tunnel syndrome, rotator cuff injuries, plantar fasciitis, and headaches caused by tension. Massage is also great for reducing stress.
I’m pregnant – is it safe for me to get a massage at Omni?
It’s completely safe. At Omni, we’re experienced at doing prenatal and post natal massage.
How does massage therapy work? Are there scientific studies about how it works?
There is much scientific evidence explaining the benefits of massage therapy. For example, a recent study reported in the NY Times demonstrated that even a single session of massage caused significant biological changes. For example, it reduced the level of the key stress hormone cortisol and increased the hormones related to contentment. It also strengthened the immune system.
Is massage therapy recognized by the medical profession?
The medical profession has frequently supported the benefits of massage, especially for such conditions involving muscular tension or certain types of pain. In many chiropractic, physical therapy, and sports medicine clinics, massage is an essential part of patients’ treatment plans.
I have a sports injury – should I see a massage therapist, a chiropractor, or a doctor to get it treated?
Massage can be beneficial when you’re dealing with many types of injury. However, it is imperative to get a professional evaluation before having a massage, especially is there is acute pain or if the body has suffered any sort of trauma. You should be aware that in New York State, a massage therapist is not allowed to diagnosis. Our approach at Omni is that each healing modality has its strengths and limitations. While we have had great success using massage as a single modality, we’ve also had excellent results using massage in conjunction with other modalities, especially chiropractic or acupuncture.
I’m in a lot of pain – how can massage therapy help me reduce the pain or cope with it?
Clients at Omni often say that they feel significantly better after receiving massage treatment. In some cases, people have been in serious pain for months, and after just a few treatments they see a significant reduction in their level of discomfort. This has been especially true when clients have used multiple modalities to treat acute pain, such as massage therapy along with chiropractic or acupuncture. In some cases, clients have been able to reduce or eliminate the use of prescription pain medicines; remember, however, this will vary from person to person.
I have a very low threshold for pain – will a massage hurt me or be uncomfortable?
This is where the therapists at Omni shine, as the true talent of a massage therapist is to work within everyone’s threshold of pain, and not exacerbate a situation. The best way to make sure your therapist works within your threshold is to let them know what pressure feels okay and what pressure hurts you. Honest communication is critical in a massage session, so you should from the start establish your pain threshold with your therapist. However, to resolve your problem sometimes pressure is needed to release the fascia (the layer of fibrous tissue around a muscle or joint) and get into deeper levels of muscle and tissue. The key thing is to breathe through any pain, tell your therapist if you feel that you are tensing up, and make sure you are hydrated before a massage (which does not mean chugging a litter of water right before!). The more hydrated you are, the less painful and the more successful your massage will be.
How long will the massage therapy session last?
We offer 30 minute, 60 minute, and 90 minute sessions. If you have one specific area you only want to work on, then a 30-minute session may be enough for you. However, if you want a deeper focus on two or more areas, then choose a 60-minute session. If you want to focus on a few areas, as well as work the whole body, then 90 minutes would be perfect.
